Nevada Teacher Certification Types
Nevada offers three types of teaching licenses. The Provisional License is issued to those lacking sufficient educational requirements necessary for the Initial License. The Initial/Standard License is issued to those who have completed a degree from an appropriate teacher preparation program. The Professional License is issued to those with at least a Master’s Degree and three years of teaching experience.

Alternative Certification and Other Requirements
- Teacher Certification Renewal: Your Standard Teaching License is valid for five years and is renewable up to nine months before its expiration. To renew it, you must complete six credits of professional development or receive National Board Certification.
- Nevada Alternative Teacher Certification: Nevada offers two alternate routes to becoming a teacher. If you hold a Bachelor’s Degree, you can pursue a teaching license through the Mountain Pacific Troops to Teachers program. If you have a high school diploma, you can pursue the Business and Industry Adult Career and Technical Education license.
- Nevada Substitute Teaching: Nevada requires its substitute teachers to earn a K-12 Special License with a Substitute Endorsement. To do this, you must have either an associate’s degree or have earned at least 60-semester credits from a regionally accredited university or college.
- Reciprocity: Out-of-state teachers can apply for a Nevada Teaching Certificate through reciprocity if they apply for the Initial Teacher Certification and provide proof of your current license and examination scores.
