There are two levels of licensure for teachers in Massachusetts. The basic level is the Initial license, which can then be followed by a Professional license.

Basic level licensing requires completion of the MTEL (Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure) exam in the appropriate areas.
Teacher Experience
To move from initial licensing to professional licenses, you’ll need at least 3 years of teaching and a one-year induction, or the equivalent education and experience.
Background Check
State and federal background and fingerprinting tests are required for licensure.
Alternative Certification and Other Requirements
- Massachusetts Alternative Teacher Certification: The alternate pathway to licensing is a preliminary vocational technical license, which is geared towards those who wish to become career education instructors.
- Teacher Certification Renewal: Initial licensing is good for five years, and may be renewed During this time you must fulfill the requirements of professional licensing. Professional licenses must be renewed every five years, and requires 10 Professional Development Points of continuing education.
- Massachusetts Substitute Teaching: Permits and licensing aren’t necessary to serve as a substitute teacher, though certain minimum qualifications must be met.
- Reciprocity: If you can verify and document three years of experience, you may be able to transfer your license as Massachusetts is a participant in the NASDTEC agreement. This will grant you a temporary license for a year while you complete state requirements.
